No,the movie isn't all bad, though I dearly love how that other reviewerput it so eruditely: 'Bettie's films were destroyed. So if I go thumbs down, something must be very, very wrong. Apparently, the previous night, thenight of the 'world premiere' the director/writer/producer had been inthe audience and had gotten to witness people laugh at and walk out onhis movie. The only redeeming part of the experience wasthat we got to laugh about the fact that someone had actually made thismovie and thought it was good. My friends and I left the theatre feeling like we had just paid 8dollars to be tortured. This movie makes 'Dude, Where's M圜ar?' look like Citizen Kane. The cuts, the graininess, and the lack of a sensual plotmade this a memorable experience. I have seen many cheaply made independentfilms but somehow the cinematography and quality of this movie set itapart from anything else I have ever seen. This was easy to tell as the parts that would get the mostlaughs were the ones which were supposed to be serious or revelatory. I heard a lot oflaughter in that theatre, but people were not laughing with the moviemaker, they were laughing at the movie and its poor content andstructure. A scene would start going then someone would say 'wowyou're so great Bettie, why don't we make another movie.' this would befollowed by a 5 minutes of a Bettie Paige remake which was almost asridiculous as (and even more boring than) the normal part of the the end of the movie people were laughing every time another BettiePaige movie remake came up. The movie isonly 90 minutes long and the content of those 90 minutes is sub par tosay the least.
Dark Angel wasa bad biography and misguided homage to Bettie Paige, in which half themovie is actually just remakes of old Bettie Paige movies. Its not a documentary though it was sort of sold as one. Before it started the owner of the theatre gotup and told us how half the audience had left the theatre the nightbefore, which happened to be its 'world premiere.' I don't think anyonein the theatre understood just how bad the movie was going to be atthat point. I saw it during the 2004 SanFrancisco Film Festival.
DARK ANGEL accurately recreates some of the lost work in Klaw's original style.This movie was bad beyond belief. Klaw was investigated by the US Senate, and subsequently destroyed many of his photographs. During this time she was working with Irving Klaw, the first famous fetish photographer, who made Bettie one of the first bondage models. This documentary concentrates on Bettie's last three years at a pin-up model before her disappearance. Prominently positioned in the public eye, she nonetheless ended her career in 1957 and moved to Florida under rather mysterious circumstances. Bettie went on to become the nation's most beloved pin-up model, achieving her greatest renown as a 1955 PLAYBOY centerfold. She was discovered in New York City after a difficult but triumphant childhood in Nashville, Tennessee, by an amateur photographer for whom she agreed to pose.
America's sweetheart in every way, Bettie Page became an icon of the 1950s, winning hearts with a sweet smile and girl-next-door demeanor, which could quickly morph into that of a vixen in bondage, or a playful, naughty kitten.
